The Top 5 Reasons I Love Squarespace as a Web Platform
It’s no secret that I love Squarespace. It’s the platform I’ve built my business around, and I very much believe in what it’s doing for people: bringing an easy-to-edit building experience, to allow everyone to have a web presence.
If I had to narrow it down to five reasons, though, these would be hands-down the main reasons I use Squarespace as a platform, and am proud to design in this platform.
Five reasons I love Squarespace
It’s a WYSIWYG (pronounced wizzy-wig)
That crazy sounding acronym means “What you see is what you get.” Squarespace is a builder that allows you to build on-screen, “as you see it.” Wordpress, for example, is not a WYSIWG by nature. Wordpress is very much the opposite of Squarespace: unless you’ve got a page builder installed, you can’t really see where you’re working. Squarespace allows you to cleanly see everything you’re doing as you do it on the page, making designing and editing a snap. The navigation and user experience is beautiful.
And I mean BEAUTIFUL. I always enjoy showing off Squarespace’s beauty when screensharing or doing my final tutorial wrap-ups. The backend (what the user sees when not within a website) boasts clean typography and simple colors, making it extremely easy to navigate and doesn’t feel hectic to move around in.Mobile styling is built right in.
As a web designer who sometimes creates custom designs for Wordpress, Shopify, and general dashboards, I do always have to consider mobile when doing my work. Not in Squarespace. Squarespace has mobile built right in, meaning when I design, I only design once. Sure, there are a few mobile tweaks to be done after the fact - but it’s nowhere near the lift it would be if I was doing custom design.Squarespace truly keeps it simple.
Unlike other builders, Squarespace has limited integrations and no plugins to speak of. While some might see this as a drawback, with Squarespace, it’s actually a blessing. Most websites don’t need intense integrations or all the bells and whistles. For small businesses, a clean and striking web presence is key. Squarespace does have great Mailchimp, Acuity, and social integrations, and those are key for most businesses. This also makes the platform lightweight and fast!Design comes first.
An attractive and clean design goes far with your clients and customers. Some builders focus on endless plugins and functionality, but Squarespace keeps it tight, and their design capabilities ensure a lovely experience. This means limiting header styling, color palettes, and design features. This might seem too limiting, but it actually ends up pushing sites to be designed thoughtfully and consistently across all pages.
Those are my top five reasons I use this platform. My own site is, of course, built on Squarespace, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The platform makes it easy for me to keep my content fresh and I have a wonderful experience when I’m using the platform itself!
